This writers worse nightmare
It happened. My greatest fear....the kind of nightmare which wakes me up in the middle of the night, drenched in a layer of sweat, and clutching my chest while gasping for air.
I spilled an entire glass of lemonade of my laptop.
In a matter of sixty seconds, not only did my computer screen go dark, so did my hopes and dreams. Nothing but a bleak, black picture.
Completely panicked, I did the first thing which came to mind.
I froze.
Sure, most under this circumstance would do what came completely natural...like unplug their computer. Or at least turn it off. However, my first reaction was to stare at the laptop in utter disbelief as the sticky substance ran a direct course through the circuit board to wipe out all of my data. A little dramatic? I'm sure for some this may be, but for me this really is my worst nightmare.
Here's the kicker....I didn't have any of my work saved. I'd been meaning to. Even been carrying one of those handy little zip drives in my coat pocket for weeks. Of course, I never had the time. Not one minute to spare to save all of the work I'd spent hours fine tuning and finessing to what I consider my greatest contribution to the world.
Perhaps that was the thought which motivated me and got my butt in gear. I'm not sure. All I can remember is clutching the still dripping laptop in my weary hands and racing to Best Buy to speak with one of the geeks.
The news was far more devastating then I first thought possible, dashing any glimmer of hope I had. However, forever an optimist, the doubt only lasted a minute. According to the member of the geek squad, there was one chance in a hundred that my data was recoverable. Running with the slim possibility, I rushed home and immediately placed the hard drive into an airtight container of rice.
Yes, rice.
After several days and a lot of prayers, I returned to Best Buy with hard drive in hand and was blessed that the geeks were able to regain my data. Thank you Geek Squad. I was lucky, but there is a lesson to be learned. Always back up your data.
I am now armed with the largest, data storing device money could buy.
And I save absolutely everything.
